CAREER SPOTLIGHT: Facility Engineering Services

A facility service department involves professionals who help maintain equipment, buildings and other engineering structures inside a commercial facility. It’s a career that requires certain skills to complete projects. These professionals may include but are not limited to; Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Painters, Maintenance Workers, Engineers, and Mechanics.

Developing these skills can help perform responsibilities more efficiently and make a better prospect for hiring throughout the Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) region.

Plumbing

Installation and maintenance of the natural gas, medical gas, water and sewer systems throughout the Prairie Mountain Health region. This would include showers, bathtubs, toilets, sinks, drain lines, and piping.

Education Requirements: Must obtain a Journeyperson Plumber status recognized by the Province of Manitoba & Journeyperson Gas Fitter with a “B” status recognized by the Province of Manitoba.
Plumber program can be taken at various institutions not limited to Assiniboine Community College Plumber | Assiniboine College; Gasfitter “B” | Assiniboine College; Red River College Plumbing – Overview:: RRC Polytech Program & Course Catalogue.

Electrician

Maintains, alters, repairs and installs various electrical systems and electrical and mechanical equipment throughout the PMH region. Such as lighting, emergency lights, maintaining fire alarm systems, scan card/lock systems, boiler controls, communication systems, HVAC systems, motor/generator equipment, laundry/housekeeping/ and food service equipment.

Education Requirements: Must obtain a Journeyperson Electrician Certificate recognized by the province of Manitoba.
Electrician program can be taken through a variety of institutions not limited to Red River College Electrical – Overview:: RRC Polytech Program & Course Catalogue; Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology Electrical Trades Technology | Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (mitt.ca); Paid Apprenticeship programs through Manitoba Hydro Power electrician (hydro.mb.ca)

Carpenter

Responsible for performing various skilled tasks in maintaining, repairing, altering and constructing woodwork, furniture and fixtures throughout the Prairie Mountain Health region in offices and wards and building interior and exterior structures and roofs as required. Such as renovating rooms, building cabinets, and door maintenance (including related hardware).

Education Requirements: Must obtain a Journeyperson Carpenter Certificate recognized by the Province of Manitoba.
Carpenter program can be taken through various institutions not limited to Assiniboine Community College Carpenter | Assiniboine College.

Refrigeration & HVAC Mechanics

Responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of all air conditioning, HVAC, refrigeration, heating and cooling
systems, and preventative maintenance of such systems.

Education Requirements: Must obtain Journeyperson Refrigeration/Air Conditioning Mechanic course recognized by the Province of Manitoba; Journeyperson Gas Fitter “B” Status recognized by the Province of Manitoba; Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association- Ozone Depleting Substance Regulation Certificate.

Painter/Decorator

Perform demand and preventative maintenance on PMH assets to provide a safe, comfortable, supportive environment for all patients, staff, and visitors. Such as renovating rooms, patching and painting.

Education Requirements: Must obtain a Journeyman Painter/Decorator status recognized by the Province of Manitoba.
Painter/Decorator apprenticeship program can be taken through various institutions, including Red River College Apprenticeship: RRC Polytech.

Locksmith

Responsible for performing various skilled tasks, including setting up and maintaining lock and closer functions, master key systems, and fire exit hardware. Such as Med cart troubleshooting, door lock requests, card scan devices, cutting keys, installation/repair/replacement of locks and related hardware.

Education Requirements: Completing training/courses in key systems, locks, and door hardware. Experience in maintaining/troubleshooting magnetic lock systems and key systems in multi-building facilities.

Maintenance I

Performs preventative maintenance, installation and repairs of equipment, and maintenance of buildings and grounds. Performs duties of plumbing, carpentry, painting, refrigeration, ventilation, air conditioning, roofing and other hospital equipment maintenance as personal knowledge and skill permits.

Education Requirements: Grade 12 (Mb Standards); Previous relevant experience in institutional maintenance or trade(s) considered an asset.

Maintenance II

Responsible for maintaining and caring for the facilities’ grounds, buildings and equipment. Performs duties of plumbing, carpentry, painting, refrigeration, ventilation, air conditioning, roofing and other hospital equipment maintenance as personal knowledge and skill permits.

Education Requirements: Grade 12 (Mb Standards); Previous relevant experience in institutional maintenance or trade(s) considered an asset.

5th Class Power Engineer

Performs preventative maintenance, installation and repairs of equipment, and maintenance of buildings and grounds. Responds in a timely manner to maintenance requisitions from services within the facility. Aids other services within the facility as requested.

Education Requirements: 5th Class Power Engineer Certificate recognized by the Province of Manitoba.

Engineer 3rd Class

Responsible for ensuring a constant continuous steam supply for heating the hospital buildings and various departments. Works closely with the Chief Engineer to support other maintenance personnel as required.

Education Requirements: 3rd class power engineer certificate recognized by the Province of Manitoba.

Engineer 2nd Class

Responsible for maintaining and operating the physical plant and infrastructure. Perform demand and preventative maintenance on buildings and equipment as required.

Education Requirements: 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate Recognized by the Province of Manitoba.
