CAREER SPOTLIGHT: Security Services, Security Guard

 

About the Career

The Security Guards are healthcare employees who are licensed Security Guards as per the Private Investigators and Security Guards Act. Security Guards provide a safe, comfortable and supportive environment for all clients, staff and visitors by encouraging reliability, effectiveness and efficiency in the operation of the Security Services department.

  • Maintains a physical presence within the health facility to provide for the protection of life and property.
  • Maintenance of law and order in coordination with law enforcement or other agencies as necessary at PMH owned or operated sites.
  • Cooperates with all other staff to produce a harmonious working relationship throughout Prairie Mountain Health.
  • Provides response to situations that may pose a threat to the safety or security of persons in or around PMH designated sites or properties.
  • De-escalates or attempts resolution of direct hostile/aggressive situations in conformance with training designation, and required knowledge of crisis intervention/conflict resolution or other personal and public safety techniques, or as stipulated in regional policy and procedures.
  • Supports and provides training and orientation to security personnel as directed.
  • Responds to all emergency situations and supports the direction of the incident commander to assist in response or event management; or may as required act as the Site Incident Command until relieved in an emergency situation. Provides direct support for response to fire safety, evacuation or any other emergency codes as required.
  • Evicts non-authorized person in a professional and sensitive manner. Coordinating with clinical providers as necessary and contacts police should situations dictate.
  • Completes necessary notification to manager or supervisor when identifies defective or broken, unsafe equipment or infrastructure while performing the duties of the protection guard. This may include damage to parking lot resources, signage, grounds, CCTV equipment failure, door failure or unsafe surfaces.
  • As required, ensures visitor and staff parking infrastructure are maintained and operable as per operational need. Completes parking enforcement as per policy and municipal bylaws.
  • Monitors and works with CCTV, Card Access or other related security systems and controls or support plans as required.
  • Provides for interior and exterior grounds patrols and responses. Reports deficiencies or damages to property, signage, lighting, vehicles or equipment

Prairie Mountain Health includes a regional Security Services program, with Security Guards in base locations across the region; currently at Brandon Regional Health Center, Dauphin Regional Health Center, Swan Valley Health Center, and Russell and Virden Health Centre’s. Though officers are based at these sites, they provide security services at all PMH sites located within these communities. Based upon operational need, Security Guards have been dispatched to other facilities across the region to provide security support.

Qualifications/Education/Training

Interested in becoming a Security Guard? Applicants must have the required qualifications below:

  • Grade 12 (MB standards) or equivalent (GED)
  • Valid Class 5 (or higher) Manitoba Driver’s license (or provincial equivalent)
  • Access to a personal vehicle to provide service within Prairie Mountain Health
  • Current Manitoba Justice Security Guard license*
  • Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check (current within 6 months)
  • Child Abuse Registry Check (current within 6 months)
  • Adult Abuse Registry Check (current within 6 months)
  • Eligible for and maintains licensure to practice as a Security Officer (Guard) in the province of Manitoba

*All Security Guards are required to complete a mandatory security guard training program, provided by an approved training provider through Manitoba Justice, and complete a written exam to obtain licensure. To learn more, visit https://www.gov.mb.ca/justice/commsafe/private/index.html.

Opportunities for Career Advancement

Once a Security Guard qualification is obtained, officers have the opportunity to complete additional training, and education to support career advancement, either at the base site or within the PMH Security Services Program.
