Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day - September 9, 2020

August 2020

The Legislative Assembly of Manitoba enacted Bill 230, The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Act to acknowledge September 9 in each year as FASD Awareness Day.

Brandon and Area FASD Coalition is recognizing FASD Awareness Day through partnership with Robin’s Donuts on 10th Street.  The coalition is sponsoring the first 150 coffees to visiting patrons.  Each coffee cup will identify the link to the Manitoba FASD Coalition website to enhance the sharing of current literature and research.

The South Parkland FASD Collaborative (based in Dauphin) is recognizing this day by donating books about FASD to the Parkland Regional Library and local schools.  Included are books for children and adults. Children’s books about FASD are a great way to inform a child about their diagnosis and acknowledge their strengths and challenges.  The books can also provide information and understanding to other children about the disability.

“FASD is a lifelong disability. Individuals with FASD may experience some degree of challenges in their daily living, and need support with motor skills, physical health, learning, memory, attention, communication, emotional regulation, and social skills.” (CanFASD Research Network, 2018)
