Arriving at the Hospital
Yes. As restoration work continues, you will notice some temporary changes both outside and inside the hospital.
Outside the hospital, there will be temporary washroom trailers, air handling units and other equipment needed to support hospital operations while repairs continue. Construction activity will also be visible around the site.
Inside the hospital, much of the Emergency Department, Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging areas will look familiar. However, some areas of the hospital will be closed to the public as restoration work continues. You may also notice temporary power cables secured along walls and ceilings, which are being used to safely provide power to essential hospital services.
These temporary measures are in place to support the safe delivery of patient care while recovery work continues throughout the facility.
Yes. All patients visiting the Emergency Department, Laboratory or Diagnostic Imaging must first check in at the Security Desk. Security staff will direct you to the appropriate registration area and help ensure patients are guided to the correct location.
Once you go through the security check point you proceed to the patient registration desk as you would have done prior.
Yes. One family member or support person may accompany a patient when needed. The waiting area has limited space, we ask that patients bring only one support person whenever possible. This will help ensure there is enough room for patients and families requiring emergency care.
Safety During Construction
The areas of the hospital which have reopened have been prepared to be safe for patients, staff and public. Significant work has been completed to assess and prepare operational areas for reopening, including environmental testing, engineering reviews, air quality monitoring, permit reviews, fire and life safety assessments, and implementation of additional safety controls.
Interim fire safety systems and operational measures are in place to ensure ongoing safety.
There are no concerns with air quality on the Main floor. Air quality testing has been conducted regularly, with the recent testing on the entire space completed on September 3, 3026. Following the ED opening, regular weekly air sampling will be conducted while restoration continues. A negative airflow system keeps the areas of the hospital that remain under repair completely separate from the areas that are open to patients and staff.
Some construction and restoration activities may generate noise while work continues in affected areas of the facility. Every effort will be made to minimize the impact on patients, staff, and visitors through project planning and scheduling of work activities. Concerns raised by staff or patients will be reviewed and addressed as part of ongoing operational and workplace safety processes.
