     Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, PMH and the Medical Director, Community Oncology Program CancerCare Manitoba, we are seeking applicants for the position of Family Physician in Oncology – Navigation (FPO-N) at the Western Manitoba Cancer Center.

The FPO-N is a physician who:

Works in a team setting providing clinical/consultative services for patients with or at risk for cancer or blood disorders.

Manages cancer patients receiving active cancer treatment in collaboration with the primary medical oncologist/hematologist and radiation oncologist.

Provides medical services at the Western Manitoba Cancer Center and Community and/or Regional Cancer Program hubs in Regional Health Authorities throughout Manitoba.

Is responsible for the timely work-up and diagnosis of selected patients suspected of having cancer and manages the transfer of newly diagnosed cancer patients to the appropriate specialist.

Acts as an educational resource on cancer in the region.

 Accountabilities:    
   
  • Provide strong, visionary cancer care leadership through the WMCC to Prairie Mountain Health ( PMH)

  • Engage, along with the Medical Director (Medical Lead) in strategic planning for regional cancer services supporting the continuum of patients’ cancer journey

  • Engage and works cosely with the Head, Department of Primary Care Oncology and the Medical Director of the Community Oncology Program at CCMB

  • Provide a minimum of 5 half days per week providing clinical services including the initiation of appropriate tests, investigations, consultations for eligible patients suspected of having cancer, clinical review of new and active patients, oversight of patients receiving chemotherapy and follow-up of patients no longer on active chemotherapy

  • Work collaboratively with the Radiation Oncologists at the Western MB Cancer Centre in providing care for cancer patients receiving treatment at the Centre

  • Work as part of a team including Primary Care Providers, Nurse Navigators and Psychosocial Oncology Clinicians

  • Ensure that care of patients is transferred appropriately

  • Create comprehensive clinic notes and letters to other involved physicians and Nurse Practitioners in a timely fashion

  • Act as clinical resource and provide leadership

  • Help facilitate and/or provide educational sessions about cancer and cancer diagnosis to primary care providers, with support from the Professional Development Coordinators in the Community Oncology Program, CCMB

  • Actively attend and participate in the Provincial Cancer Conference and other cancer related education opportunities

  • Work closely with regional and Winnipeg-based imaging, surgical and other specialists

  • Initiate referral to home care and symptom management/palliative care services when necessary

  • Act a member of the Regional Cancer Program Leadership team with the mandate to achieve high quality cancer care and control in the region

   
   
   
     
Qualifications:  
  • Have and maintain a valid license to practice Medicine in the Province of Manitoba.
  • Have an appointment with Prairie Mountain Health Medical Staff.
  • Shall have or will have a nil appointment in the Department of Primary Care Oncology of CCMB.
  • Have and maintain liability coverage with the CMPA or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to build consensus.
   
   
   
   
   
     
Assets:  
  • Have experience as an FPO and or FPO-N in Manitoba or other jurisdictions.
  • Have completed special training as an FPO in Manitoba either as part of R3 training program or through CCMB’s Community Oncology Program.
  • Knowledge of current and new/emerging cancer guidelines.
  • 2 years of more experience as a Family Physician
   
   
   
   
     
Renumeration:   Remuneration is derived from fee-for-service billing as per the current Manitoba physician’s manual negotiated in the Master Agreement between the Minister of Health and Doctors Manitoba.
     
Required Training:  

Successful incumbent will require at a minimum a 2 week training course at CancerCare Manitoba. Upon review of incumbent’s years of experience as a Family Physician an additional 2 weeks may be required. Timelines of training would be done in collaboration with incumbent, region and CCMB.
