MB Start Program and PMH Partner for Success

Each year, over 6,000 newcomers from more than 120 countries visit Manitoba Start to connect to settlement, orientation, language, and employment services. The majority of newcomers are internationally-educated professionals and skilled workers.

In 2014–2015, over 400 internationally-educated nurses registered for career services at Manitoba Start.  Manitoba Start connects business to a world-class workforce and is the leading provider of career development services for newcomers to the Province.  Connecting with health industry employers hiring for intermediate positions became a priority for Manitoba Start.

At a career fair, Larissa Kominko, Supervisor Recruitment, Prairie Mountain Health (PMH), was introduced to Manitoba Start.
“It was brought to my attention that many Manitoba Start clients are internationally-trained nurses or health professionals. I immediately realized that there was great potential for Manitoba Start clients to be employed in our health care organization,” Kominko stated.

Manitoba Start addresses employers’ recruitment needs by connecting   business to the highly skilled and job-ready newcomers who move to the province. PMH supports employers with customized tools and resources to retain a diverse workforce and create inclusive workplaces.

Manitoba Start customized its services to meet PMH’s specific hiring needs. Staff organized information sessions / employer cafés for PMH to present their hiring opportunities to many internationally educated, job-ready    professionals.  With so many clients interested in employment, PMH screened and held interviews and were successful in welcoming clients to the PMH health care team.  Nine (9) clients accepted offers and relocated to Virden to work at the Westman Nursing Home as Health Care Aides.  There were a large number of vacancies at Westman Nursing Home at one time, and so it seemed like a perfect match, knowing there were internationally-trained health-care professionals seeking employment, to fill this need in Virden.

Although this was a large number of new recruits to one facility at one time, Lindsay Cooper, Care Team Manager, was able to organize and coordinate extensive orientation to ensure that the new employees felt comfortable in their new work environment.  The staff at the facility were also very accepting and appreciative of the newly hired staff.  PMH was very pleased to see this influx of talented individuals who, not only filled positions in demand, but also contributed to their new communities.

In May 2016, Manitoba Start held their annual Awards ceremony, where PMH was nominated for New Employer Partner of the Year Award.  On May 12, 2016, Larissa Kominko, Supervisor Recruitment & Lindsay Cooper, Care Team Manager attended the Manitoba Start Awards Ceremony and graciously accepted the award for New Employer Partner of the Year Award.  We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to partner with MB Start and meet the many job ready clients.  The extra time and effort involved from everyone proved to be a big success.

PMH continues to share employment related information with newcomers at MB Start and will continue the partnership to assist in placing skilled individuals into the workforce.
